BANGOR – Eva O. “Sally” Oakes went home to be with her Lord and Savior, May 14, 2008. She was born Aug. 28, 1931, the daughter of Clarence and Ruby (Niles) Oakes. Eva graduated from Old Town High School and married her lifelong partner, Chet. She sold Avon and was a homemaker until the Lord called her and Chet to serve at Glad Tidings Church, formerly known as Pentecostal Assembly, where she worked in the office. In 1977, she and Chet moved to Bangor to become property caretakers for the church until she was forced to retire due to heart issues. She then enjoyed volunteering at Eastern Maine Medical Center for the Heart to Heart program. She also enjoyed quilting, NASCAR in person and on TV, and her ever-growing teapot collection. Recently, she enjoyed her Beano and card games with some very special friends. She enjoyed spending time with her family, including her 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; also a special kitty, “Mr. P.” She was predeceased by her parents; a sister, Joyce Thomas; many aunts and uncles. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Chet; a brother and sister-in-law, Linwood and Marilyn; four children and their families, Chuck and Diane of Orrington, Scott of Arizona, Timm and Heidi of Bar Harbor; a daughter, Becky of Bangor, who was one of her best friends; two sisters-in-law, Jane Osgood and Earlene Oakes; a brother-in-law, Bing Oakes; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, which she loved dearly. A special thanks to all the great nurses and doctors at Eastern Maine Medical Center. Services will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, May 18, at Glad Tidings Church with the Rev. Morris officiating. A private burial will be at a later date by request of the family. In lieu of flowers, please send donations for the Heart to Heart Rehab, through Glad Tidings Church, 1033 Broadway, Bangor, ME 04401.
