LINCOLN – Evelyn Haggas, 99, died Feb. 26, 2005, at a Lincoln healthcare facility. She was born Feb. 11, 1906, in Lawrence, Mass. the daughter of John and Ethel (Goldthorpe) Haggas. Evelyn contracted polio as a young child, and was always burdened by wearing a big, heavy brace on her leg, so that she could get around. She carried that burden well, working at the worsted mill and later as a clerk at the Newberry store in Lincoln. She was very active in the Congregational Church, the Sunday school, and the Pilgrim Daughters. In later years, she went to work for Wilber and Tish Clay, and the Clay Funeral Home, where she answered the phone for many years. She became very attached to the family, and was thought of as another grandmother by the younger generations of the family. Although Evelyn outlived all of her relatives, she had many friends who looked out for her and visited her both before and after she became a resident of Colonial Acres Nursing Home in 1993. Up until recent years, she was very active in nursing home activities. The care and compassion of the staff at the nursing home made her last few years so much easier and gave her another whole family. Friends may call from 2-4 and 7-8 p.m. Monday, at the Clay Funeral Home, 7 Lee Road, Lincoln. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Darrell Joiner officiating. Spring interment will be in Lincoln Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Activities Fund, Colonial Acres, P.O. Box 70, Lincoln, ME 04457. Donations may be left at the funeral home. For an online register please visit www.clayfuneralhome.com.
