JONESPORT – Evelyn Jane Barker Alley Watt, 100, died Saturday, March 5, 2005, at Woodland Terrace in Hernando, Fla. She was born Jan. 17, 1905, in Tall Barney’s house on Beals, the oldest of nine children, born to Joshiah and Emily (Alley) Alley. She was predeceased by her husband of nearly 40 years, Clarence; three sisters, Annie Frost, Wilhemia Ally and Virginia Quimby; four brothers, Larson, Eugene, Virgil and Harland. Evelyn is survived by a beloved baby sister, Thelma Newcomb and her husband, Whitney Newcomb Jr., of Inverness, Fla.; sister-in-law, Annie Alley of Cherryfield; two special nieces, Imogene “Babe” Fickett of Milbridge, with whom Evelyn and Clarence shared their love and home from sixth grade through high school and years in between, she and “Uncle Class” were the parents Imogene needed; Joanne Bailey of California loved coming to Jonesport to visit Evelyn and Uncle Class; she will also be greatly missed by her four nephews, Larson Alley Jr. of Jonesboro, James Quimby of Scarborough, Burgess Newcomb of Florida and Gary Newcomb of Ohio. Evelyn also leaves behind many other nieces, nephews and many friends. Evelyn and Clarence owned and operated Watt’s General Store for 20 years in Jonesport. She was Jonesport’s oldest citizen, which she was very proud of, always showing pictures of the event. Evelyn was a member of the Beals Advent Christian Church and was very proud that her grandfather helped build it many years ago. She was able to continue to stay in her home until last July thanks to the young women who helped her: Sally Pierce, Heidi Hinkley, Belinda McDonald, Darlene Gebo and Brenda Beal. She went home to Inverness, Fla., with her sister, Thelma and her husband, Whitney, and lived with them for five months before going to Woodland Terrace. Evelyn loved telling about her life and making sure that her family knew all the family history. She graduated from Jonesport High School, nearly died in an accident when she was in high school, went to Washington State Normal School (now the University of Maine at Machias), and taught school for a year at Addison Basin. She spent summers at Seal Harbor with Clarence, visited Thelma and Whitney and family in Florida, and went to California to visit her sister, Virginia and her family. Evelyn also traveled to the Holy Land and planted a tree and rode a camel. She had a very interesting and full life. Friends are invited to visit with the family 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Beals Advent Christian Church, where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, March 12, with Pastor George Woodward, Evelyn’s cousin, officiating. Spring interment will be at the Greenwood Cemetery, Jonesport. Arrangements are by Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Machias.
