BINGHAM – Evelyn Violet Atwood, 96, died Friday Feb. 6, 2004, at a local hospital. She was born Oct. 7, 1907, on her beloved “Old Bluff” in Concord, the daughter of Coney and Nellie (Rollins) Robinson. Mrs. Atwood graduated from Bingham High School, Class of 1924. She graduated from Boston University with a bachelor’s degree in Latin and French. She was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority and kept in contact with her sorority and Boston University throughout her life. She pursued graduate study in history at Bates College and the University of Maine during her teaching career. During her 46-year teaching career she taught Latin, French, History, English and Algebra at Bingham High School and Upper Kennebec Valley Memorial High School retiring in 1976. She was drama coach and advisor to the yearbook “Boreas” for many years. Mrs. Atwood loved teaching and all of her students and is remembered today by many of her students. Evelyn was married to Leon H. Atwood on Dec. 24, 1936, at the Federated Church in Skowhegan. They had two children, Carol and Brian. She was predeceased by her husband; sisters, Emma Gile and Dassie Nickerson; and brothers, Alston Robinson and Alvah Robinson. She is survived by her daughter, Carol Parsons of Bingham; her son, Brian Atwood of Bingham; grandchildren, Scott, Jeffrey, William and Elizabeth; great-grandchildren, Bradley, Katherine and Samuel; a sister-in-law, Althea Robinson; niece, Jenis Robinson of Pleasant Ridge Plt.; caregiver, Shirley Barron of Bingham; several nieces, nephews and cousins. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday Feb. 11, 2004, at the First Congregational Church, Meadow Street, Bingham, with the Rev. Douglas W. Drown officiating. Interment will be later in the spring at Pierce Cemetery in Solon. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make a memorial contribution to the Evelyn R. Atwood Scholarship Fund, care of U.K.V.M. High School, P.O. Box 669, Bingham, ME 04920 or to the 1st Congregational Church, P.O. Box 114, Bingham, ME 04920. Arrangements are by Giberson Funeral Home, 18 River St. Bingham.
