BUCKSPORT – Another of the “Greatness Generation” has left this Earth to join his lost buddies and family in eternity. Everett Ginn Mercer, 85, died July 22, 2007, at the Maine Veterans’ Home, Bangor. Everett was born March 6, 1922, in North Orland, the son of Belmont and Marcia (Ginn) Mercer. He attended Bucksport schools and was a member of the Class of 1942 from Bucksport High School. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Marine Corps in the South Pacific theater from October 1942 to June 1945. He was in the Battle of Tarawa and received a Purple Heart at the Battle of Saipan. He was an avid outdoorsman and spent his most enjoyable days hunting and fishing at his camp on Craig’s Pond and the Northern Maine woods. Everett was a selectman for the town of Bucksport, a life-member of the Felicity Lodge No. 19 AF & AM, Bucksport and the Elm Street Congregational Church. He was active with the Bucksmills Rod and Gun Club and the Penobscot Bay Investment Club. Everett is survived by his beloved wife and life companion of 62 years, Genevieve (Oliver) Mercer; two sons, Robert Mercer and wife, Jean, Paul Mercer and wife, Brenda; a brother, Edward Mercer and wife, Margaret; two sisters, Thelma Woodhead and Julia Remick and husband, Ralph. He leaves five grandchildren, Todd Mercer and wife, Fawn, Shawn Mercer and wife, Molly, Cara Audibert and husband, Kevin, Carly and Kyle Mercer; and 10 beloved great-grandchildren, which were the love of his life. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Adora and husband, Willis Leach. Visiting hours will be shared with family and friends 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 25, at Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, 28 Elm St., Bucksport. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, July 26, at Elm Street Congregational Church with the Rev. Linda Smith and the Rev. Peter Remick officiating. A gathering of conversation and refreshments will be after in Brown Hall of Elm Street Congregational Church.
