(WARDWELL) MALCOLM BANGOR – Fern Hope (Wardwell) Malcolm, wife of the late James M. Malcolm, died Feb. 23, 2008, at a Bangor hospital. She was born May 2, 1922, in Woodland, Aroostook County, to Grover and Edna (Nelson) Wardwell. Fern was a war bride, married in 1945, and had the opportunity to live in Bermuda in the early days of her marriage. After Jim’s discharge, they started their home in Pontiac, Mich. Fern enjoyed her household, being a mother, cooking, gardening and took great pride in her home. She returned to Presque Isle in 1971 and relocated to Bangor in 1975. Fern attended First United Methodist Church, where she participated in Keenagers, bible study classes, Pyburn Circle and United Methodist Women. After some medical difficulties, Fern became a resident of Ross Manor. There she felt comfortably at home and got involved in all their organized activities. She sang with their choral group and in several of their concerts. Fern was known early in her residency as “the Bingo Champ,” a title she held with great honor. It was at Ross Manor that Fern’s artistic skills came to light. Christmas of 2005, her artwork was selected for the cover of Ross Manor’s annual holiday greeting card. Although her family bragged with pride of this accomplishment, she regarded it in her typical humble fashion. Fern was a loving, kind and sharing woman; however, she was a modern communicator before her time. Her direct statements left no doubt of her thoughts or opinions; a characteristic admired by many women of her generation and appreciated by her family’s female generations who have followed. Fern will be missed by those she leaves behind; her son, James and his wife, Patricia, of Metamora, Mich.; three grandchildren, Hope, Kimberly and James and his wife, Barbara; one great-granddaughter, Nadia Chisnell; one sister, Alice Dyer of Old Town; one brother, Grover Wardwell of Yoncalla, Ore.; one sister-in-law, Phyllis Ward-well of Bangor; several nieces and nephews. Fern was predeceased by her husband, James; a granddaughter, Faith; two sisters and five brothers. Friends may call 10 a.m. until the time of service 11 a.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church, 703 Essex St., Bangor, with the Rev. Randy Chretien officiating. The family will receive guests 12:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Room, First United Methodist Church. Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery, Bangor. Fern has requested that donations through your favorite charity be made in her memory. Arrangements are by Thompson Funeral Home, 17 Hudson Road, Corinth.
