BANGOR – Fernald “Curly” Gray, 79, passed away peacefully Saturday morning, Jan. 19, 2008, at a Bangor nursing facility, after a long pulmonary illness. He was born March 30, 1928, in Sedgwick. Fernald worked hard all of his life and he took great pride in everything that he did; that was his work ethic. He started working for Owen Darling in the ’50s and when Owen’s son, Edward Darling, took on his own dealership, Curly went with him to help. Fernald work-ed up until his health wouldn’t allow him to. Curly settled into a laid back life of doing things that he enjoyed, like detailing cars, going out to eat at the Coach House and sitting on the porch watching the cars go by. He also loved to plow snow and spend time telling stories with family and friends. For many years, the Gray’s home was a place where family, friends and animals were always welcomed and nurtured. Curly also liked to go to Nicky’s Restaurant in the summer to watch the car shows on Wednesday night and go to the truck pulls at the Bangor Fair. He loved to spend time with his youngest daughter, Linda; her husband, Richard; their daughter, Ashley; and dog, Tyson. He enjoyed going out to their house on holidays and just spending time together as a family. He especially liked going over to where Linda worked, Shear Delight, Brewer, where the girls there were like a second family to him. He also found a special home and a new faith at Twin City Baptist Church, Brewer, with special pastor, Virgil E. Phinney Jr. The family would like everyone to know that the love and support that was bestowed during these trying times was felt and very much appreciated. The family would like to have his memory honored in your heart. He is survived by his beloved wife, Lena M. (Baker) Gray of 47 years; and four daughters, Ann and her husband, Dale Holmes, Elaine Gray, Brenda Gray and Linda and her husband, Richard Pollard; and eight grandchildren. He was predeceased by one daughter, Doloris Ferris; and one older sister, Lena A. Gray. A celebration of life will be conducted 6:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, at Twin City Baptist Church, 559 North Main St., Brewer, with Pastor Virgil E. Phinny Jr. officiating. A graveside service will be held in the spring. A service of Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor.
