FERNALD ‘PORKY’ EVERETT CARTER WALDOBORO – Fernald “Porky” Everett Carter, 71, passed away at his home, Jan. 27, 2004, surrounded by his loving family. Fern was born July 6, 1932, on Swan’s Island, a son of Everett L. and Marie Staples Carter. He lived on Swan’s Island, later moving to Vinalhaven where he attended school and worked digging clams. In 1950, the family moved to Waldoboro and Fern worked as a woodcutter, clam digger, lobsterman, dug blood worms, gathered seaweed, worked for Storer’s Lumber, raked blueberries for the Blueberry Company, dug potatoes in Aroostook, boat building, transported Christmas trees to Florida and worked for the Town of Waldoboro on the maintenance crew. Fern was considered as a “jack of all trades” always working hard to provide for his family and teaching them the skills he had learned. He enjoyed making pot buoys and birdhouses from cedar and farming. He enjoyed amusing people with his sense of humor and telling lots of jokes. His saying was, “as long as you can dig a clam you can always feed a family.” Fern loved his family; camping, especially in Jonesport; hunting; was a great cook, especially of smoked fish; a story teller and entertainer, loved music and was an expert at playing the harmonica and enjoyed all of his treasures. The CB Radio was a great pass time and Fern’s handles were “Petty Coat” and later, when the kids grew older, “Porky” the potbelly pig. For those who knew Fern, they will always remember him for his love for family, work ethic, sense of humor and wit and zest for life. He will be sadly missed. He was predeceased by his grandson, Ricky Allen Boyington; great-granddaughter, Linda May Boyington; brothers, Herbert, Lev, Burt and Hubert Carter.
