OLD TOWN – Florence Hunt Spencer, 84, wife of the late Beverly W. Spencer, died peacefully May 3, 2004, at a Bangor hospital. She was born Nov. 14, 1919 in Providence, R.I., a daughter of George and Florence (Riley) Hunt. She was educated in Rhode Island, and became a registered nurse certified in public health. She worked in Rhode Island, Mass., and Maine in healthcare settings and as a visiting nurse. Florence was active in community service and in the Old Town United Methodist Church. She was president of the Old Town Library League and active in many professional groups. She, her husband, and sons spent more than 45 wonderful summers at Deer Isle. She is survived by a son Lt. Col. Jonathan Hunt Spencer and his wife, Jill S. Spencer; four grandchildren, Andrew, Ashleigh, Christopher and Michael Spencer; two sisters, Eleanor Edgar and Louise Johnston; daughters-in-law, Cheryl Spencer and Debra Spencer. She was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Beverly W. Spencer, on March 26, 2001; two sons, Charles O. Spencer and Leigh H. Spencer. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town. A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, May 8, 2004, at the Old Town United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Ron Chaffee officiating. Burial will follow at Lawndale Cemetery. All are invited to return to the church fellowship hall for a light luncheon and continued fellowship.
