TENANTS HARBOR – Forrester Clark Smith, 75, died July 21, 2007, at Penobscot Bay Medical Center, after a lengthy illness. He was born Aug. 29, 1931, in Newburyport, Mass., the son of Philip Webster and Cornelia Thayer Andrew (Clark) Smith. Forrester Smith summered in Tenants Harbor for 50 years before moving there as a year-round resident in 1982. Smith was educated at schools in Far Hills, N.J.; the Brooks School, North Andover, Mass.; Trinity College, Hartford, Conn.; and attended classes at Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass. He was an officer in the U.S. Navy and served during the Korean War. He remained in the Naval Reserves after that war and obtained the rank of lieutenant commander. He was a teacher and chairman of the English department at Shore Country Day School, Beverly, Mass., before joining the Boston Symphony Orchestra as its development director/manager. In 1975, he founded a Boston design firm, Forrester and Co., Inc., as an off shoot of his successful television series, “In Good Taste.” He moved his company to Maine when he relocated there permanently. He was the author of the book “Get the Hell Out,” which was published in 2006. He was a very active and civic-minded person and served on many boards and committees. He served as the Republican state finance chairman and a committeeman; Knox County Republican finance chair; and member of the St. George Planning Board. He was a member of St. John Baptist Episcopal Church, Thomaston, and St. George’s summer chapel in Long Cove. He had also served as a trustee of the Farnsworth Museum; Boston Children’s Theater; Maine Audubon Society and Blood Research Institute; special consultant to the Maine Lobster Institute; member of the vestry nominating committee of Trinity Church, Boston; consultant on fundraising to the Toy Library; chairman of Area Interfaith Outreach; worker for Meals-on-Wheels; member of Rockland Rotary; corporator of the Penobscot Bay Medical Center; and hospice volunteer. He also worked with youth through Trekkers. He is survived by a son, Forrester C. Smith Jr. of Beverly Farms, Mass.; a daughter, Harriet Morse Smith Riegel of Darien, Conn.; five beloved granddaughters, Hadley, Ellie, Mollie, Hannah, and Amanda; and a grandson, AJ. He is also survived by two brothers, Philip Webster Smith Jr. and Bayard Webster Smith. He was predeceased by his son, Charles Russell Lowell Smith. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, at St. John Baptist Episcopal Church, Thomaston. The Rev. Peter Jenks will officiate. Friends and family are invited to attend the service with a reception after at the Bickmore, 255 Harts Neck Road, Tenants Harbor.
