ELLSWORTH – Fosta M. Staples, who celebrated her 100th birthday in August, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003, at an Ellsworth healthcare facility. She was born in Brooklin, Aug. 5, 1903, the daughter of Belah L. and Mary S. (Tainter) Cousins. Fosta was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary at Courtland Nursing Home for many years. She had a very keen sense of humor and loved to joke with her family and friends. Fosta was a very active person, living by herself well into her 100th year. She is survived by a son, Herbert Beverly and his companion, Sandra McAbee, of Maryland; a daughter, Roberta Allen and her husband, Donald, of Ellsworth; a sister, Madeline Carter and her husband, Mahlon, of Brooklin; five grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, three nieces and many friends. Fosta was predeceased by her husband in 1974, Herbert Staples; a son, Belah “Bud” in 1973, and his wife, Eleanor, in 2002; and a grandson in 1996. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at the Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, 215 Main St., Ellsworth, with the Rev. Jim Wood officiating. Interment will be at Woodbine Cemetery, Ellsworth. Gifts in memory of Fosta may be sent to a charity of one’s choice.
