BUCKSPORT – Frances Bemis passed away May 24, 2007, at a Bangor health care facility after a brief illness. She was born Oct. 16, 1916, to Inez (Jones) Delano and Capt. Frank Delano of Bucksport. As a young woman, Frances worked as a telephone operator and then for St. Regis Paper Co., until her retirement. She was an avid bridge player and wonderful gardener, having taken a number of courses on gardening and earning her certification as a nationally accredited judge for horticultural shows, such as the Bangor Fair and flower shows all over the state. Some of her favorite memories were sharing cucumber sandwiches with Jane, planting hens and chicks with her and having Jane “fake” sick to stay home from school when Gram had her bridge club. She was a lifelong member of the garden club, October Club and the Bucksport Historical Society. She was predeceased by her husband, George; her mother and father; her sister, Barbara; and brothers, Daniel and Charles. She is survived by her daughter, Gail Hallowell; granddaughters, Frances Hallowell and Terri Hallowell; and her “pride and joy,” great- granddaughter, Jane Hallowell; as well as two sisters, Catherine Delano and Inez Chaisson; numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held 2-4 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, at Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, where funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, with the Rev. Linda Smith officiating. Interment will be at Silverlake Cemetery, Bucksport. For friends who wish to honor her, in lieu of flower arrangements, please bring a single stem to leave with her. People may also send donations in her memory to the Bucksport Historical Society, P.O. Box 798, Bucksport, ME 04416.
