NORWELL, Mass., and CALAIS – Frances M. (Thomas) Sammer, 85, died unexpectedly Saturday, May 17, 2008. She was the beloved wife of the late Alfred O. Sammer. Born and raised in Calais, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Kenneth and Hazel (Smith) Thomas. She attended high school at Netherwood Private Academy, Rothsay, New Brunswick. She later attended Westbrook College, Westbrook, and went on to receive her degree in nutrition from Lesley College, Boston. After graduation, she worked for many years as a dietitian for the city of Boston. Although Frances was a resident of Norwell, Mass., for 47 years, she maintained her life-long residency in Calais and was a member of St. Anne’s Episcopal Church. She was also member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Rockland, Mass. She is survived by her son, R. Wayne Sammer and his wife, Patricia, of Baileyville; her daughters, Christine Taylor of Bangor, and Brenda Durgin and her husband, Daniel, of Norwell, Mass.; six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Leah Thomas; and her brother, Kenneth S. Thomas. Family and friends are invited to a graveside service 10 a.m. Saturday, May 24, at Calais Cemetery, Calais.
