BANGOR – Francis E. McCarthy, 73, of Bangor, died Saturday, May 22, 2004, after a year-long struggle with lung cancer. Frank was born and raised in Providence, R.I. He attended LaSalle Academy, a private Catholic High School in Providence, and he worked to pay his own tuition. Frank continued his education by earning a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from St. Michael’s Mission House (Society of the Divine Word) of Conesus, N.Y., a Master’s in Education from Rhode Island College, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Education from the University of Connecticut. Frank moved his family to Maine in 1971 after accepting a professorship at the University of Maine at Orono. His teaching career would take him from Orono to the University of Maine at Farmington. After leaving UMF, Frank briefly worked for Diocesan Human Relations Services out of St. Michael’s Center in Bangor. Frank’s final move in his career in education would return him to western Maine, where he would serve as the Director of Special Education for MSAD 21, a position from which he retired in 1993. Frank stayed in Rumford until 2002, then he returned to Bangor for the final years of his retirement. Frank is survived by his seven children, Shane, Kieran, Mitchell, Thaddeus, Michaela, Tara, and Rory; five grandchildren, Nathan McCarthy, Siobhan McCarthy, Colin McCarthy-Edwards, Liam McCarthy-Edwards, and Riley McCarthy. The family will be gathering in honor of Frank’s memory from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, May 27, 2004, at 149 14th Street. All friends of the family are invited to this informal gathering.
