BANGOR – Francis L. Haley, 94, died May 5, 2005, at Westgate Manor, Bangor. He was born Nov. 27, 1910, in Madrid, Maine, the son of Isaac and Nell Haley. He married Arleen Watson in 1933. A 1928 graduate of Phillips High School, he graduated from Gray’s Portland Business College in 1930. After brief employment at the Cudahy Packing Company he went to work at Hannaford Brothers Co. in Portland, where he worked for 45 years. He was the manager of advertising production and his work earned him several national awards in advertising, including an award for excellence from Printer’s Ink Magazine. Francis enjoyed the outdoors, hiking and camping. His particular interests were horses and the narrow gauge railroad, where he worked as a boy with his father. In later years he became a volunteer for the narrow gauge railroad in Portland, where he shared his stories with fellow members and the public. He is featured in “How We Got There From Here,” where he recounted some of his memories of a time when horses were the mode of transportation. He was a long-time member of the Cumberland County Riding Club, held several offices, and because of his service there he received their first ever lifetime membership. After his retirement in 1975, Francis volunteered at several organizations, including being a companion for residents of the Portland School for the Blind, working with children in a therapy program using horseback riding, and was a founding member of REACH, Hannaford Brothers’ retiree volunteer service program. For many years he was caregiver for his wife until her death in 1991. He was a kind and loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and enjoyed any occasion when the entire family was gathered together, especially the many camping trips at Katahdin Iron Works. Surviving are his daughters, Sandra Lewis and her husband, Robert, of Belgrade, Ann Calderwood of Hampden, Amanda Moore and her husband, Roland, of Cape Elizabeth; grandchildren, Harry Harmon, Chris Harmon, Kevin Harmon, Scott Harmon, Daniel Calderwood, David Calderwood, Alicia Moore, and Ryan Moore; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
