CAMDEN – Fred W. Morong, beloved father, grandfather and friend, died Nov. 11, 2006. Known to many as “Bumpy,” he was born Dec. 7, 1922, in Vinalhaven, and was the son of Maude and Fredrick Morong. He lived most of his youth in both Rockport and South Portland. He was married to Ruth E. Mank, his soul mate for 42 wonderful years. Fred served in the Air Corps division of the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946. He was proud to be a member of the Amity Lodge, King Hiram Council, Eastern Star, American Legion and the Kora Shrine Clubs. Fred joined Central Maine Power in 1947 working in Rockland and in 1974 moved to Bingham, where he continued his work at the Wyman Hydro Station. He retired from Central Maine Power in 1977, at which time he and Ruth moved back to Camden. They enjoyed many winters in Englewood, Fla. After the death of Ruth in 1997, Fred moved permanently back to Camden, where he lived full-time until his death. Fred was a kind, gentle man who made an impression and touched the lives of anyone who ever met him. During his children’s high school years, many of the kids in town came to know the Morong’s house as their own. They always had their door open. Fred was predeceased by siblings, Roy Morong, Ben Morong, Margaret Hanson and Mary Mank; as well as his first wife, Jean; his daughter, Janina Wykoff; and son-in-law, Fred Merriam. He is survived by two brothers, Charles Morong of Camden and Everett Morong of Scarborough; two daughters, Joan Merriam of Bucksport and Marcheta Martin of Camden; one son, Wayne Morong and his wife, Caroline, of Camden; grandchildren, Janet Becker, Kerry Froehlich, Shelley Wykoff, Michael Wykoff, Traci Merriam, Jason Merriam, Aaron Merriam, Zachary Morong, Luke Morong, Laura Morong and Liza Morong; great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Sarah, Carter and Parker Merriam, Cassandra, Erin, Corey and Kyle Wykoff and Avery and Lilia Park-Morong; several nieces and nephews, including his niece, Janice Ogier and her husband, Robert, of Camden, with whom he shared a special bond of love and friendship.
