ELLSWORTH – Freda Frances (Foss) DeLaite, 90, passed away peacefully, Jan. 29, 2005, at the Penobscot Nursing Home. She was born Jan. 8, 1915, in Weston the daughter of John Carr and Lena Edith (Hooper) Foss Sr. Freda moved to Ellsworth in 1924 and attended the Ellsworth schools while her family ran a boarding home, The Franklin House. Many summers where spent on the shores of Lucerne Lake helping their grandfather Hooper at the lake house (Lucerne Inn). Freda played varsity sports while in high school and graduated as secretary of her class in ’32. Soon after marrying Carleton S. DeLaite in 1937, World War II called Carleton to the Navy and Freda to the New England Shipbuilding Corp. in Portland. After the War, Carleton and Freda built a camp on Beech Hill Pond that soon became the hub of summer life for Freda, her children and her beloved grandchildren, Nate and Alex. Freda was a devoted homemaker and life long member of the Ellsworth community. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Irene Chapter No. 97, the Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW Post No. 109, and the Minerva Club. Freda loved to garden, listen to big band music, sew and play bridge. Freda spent many years as a teller for the Union Trust Company. As a very active member of the First Congregational Church, UCC, she joined both the Women’s Guild and The Busy Bodies. Freda’s golden years were spent enjoying the many activities of her grandchildren. Freda is survived by a son, Joseph H. DeLaite and wife, Diane, of Ellsworth; and a daughter, Julienne D. Ewing and husband, Robert, of Holden; a sister, Helen F. Grenier, of Greybull, Wyo.; her grandson, Nathaniel D. Waring; granddaughter, Alexandra L. Waring and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Carleton S. DeLaite in 1993; two brothers, Colby Foss and John C. Foss Jr.; and a sister, June F. Smith. Friends are invited to call 4-6 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth where funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 2, with the Rev. James Wood officiating. Spring interment will be at Woodbine Cemetery, Ellsworth. Those who desire may make contributions in Freda’s memory to the First Congregational Church, UCC, P.O.
