ASHLAND – Freda M. Hews, 94, died peacefully Feb. 1, 2004, at a Caribou nursing home. She was born March 16, 1909, in Sheridan, the daughter of Frederick and Martha (Sleeper) Gates. She was educated in local schools and was a 1928 graduate of Ashland High School. On June 19, 1929, she married Roscoe A. Hews and for many years they worked the family potato farm together while raising their family. Following Roscoe’s retirement from farming, they worked alongside each other as caretakers at the Alton Bay Advent Christian Campground. A devoted wife and mother, Freda’s life revolved around her family and church community. She was a member and Sunday school teacher at the Advent Christian Church in Ashland, and the church’s Women’s Home and Foreign Mission Society. She was a member of the choir for many years and also sang as a soloist for funerals, weddings and other celebrations in various area churches. Freda is survived by one son, Dana F. Hews and his wife, Virginia, of Crouseville; two daughters, Helen Skinner and her husband, Dana, of Hampden, Althea Walton and her husband, Ronald, of Hollis Center; 12 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren. Her husband, Roscoe Hews predeceased her in 1995. Relatives and friends may call 12 noon until time of service on Thursday at the Advent Christian Church, 42 Exchange St., Ashland. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at the church with the Rev. Alan Chamberlin, pastor, officiating, and assisted by Freda’s son-in-law, Rev. Ronald Walton, and her grandson-in-law, Rev. George McLaughlin. Spring interment will be in the Ashland Municipal Cemetery.
