FREDERICK D. DOWD III ARLINGTON, Va. and BANGOR – Frederick D. Dowd III, 56, died unexpectedly May 22, 2005, at his residence in Arlington, Va. He was born July 15, 1948, in Atlantic City, N.J., the son of Fred and Anne Dowd of Bangor. Stricken with Polio at age six, he never allowed his limitations prevent him from reaching beyond himself and excelling. After being home tutored he graduated from Higgins Classical Institute in Charleston where his family resided. Fred went on to attend Husson College in Bangor where he was a member of the National Honor Society and earned a degree in business administration. Entering the work force as a field accountant with Northeast Construction of Waterville he completed jobs from Augusta to Ohio. Fred then took a position as an accountant with H.J. Sockbeson Contractors in Bangor and then managed Broadway Self Storage and developed it into a thriving successful business. When the business was sold, he joined H. E. Sargent Contractors, focusing his time on marketing. With the encouragement and support of friends and family he took a position with the Department of Energy in Washington, D.C., where he joined the Office of Environmental Management. In Fred’s leisure time he enjoyed flying in glider planes, photography, writing, science fiction, TV scripts, and visiting Bar Harbor. He is survived by and sadly missed by his parents, Fred and Anne; two brothers, Kendall and wife, Susanne, of Milford, N.H., David and wife, Maria, of Medford, Mass.; three sisters, Shani Dowd of Milton, Mass., Carol Dowd Dickerson of Roslindale, Mass., Michelle Dowd of Medford, Mass.; four nieces, Kyla and Jenna Dowd and Aviana and Amber Dickerson; a nephew, Axel Thomas Dowd; and he also leaves a host of many family and friends. A service of remembrance will be held 1:30 p.m. Friday, June 24, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. Interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery, Bangor.
