PRINCETON – Fred Newman, 51, passed away Oct. 6, 2006, surrounded by his three sons and family at a Bangor hospital, after battling the side affects of a mugging in Sanford. Born Aug. 15, 1955, in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, he was a son to Virginia and Everett Newman of Princeton. Fred was a loving and caring person, wonderful and dutiful father. Fred worked for Georgia-Pacific, then Domtar for 31 years, first in the yard crew as an equipment operator, how he loved the heavy equipment operation and being involved with the maintenance. His final years were in the finishing and shipping department. Fred held the office of secretary for Local 27, United Paperworkers Union. Fred also served as union shop stewart, vice president and union president. He fought and won many jobs back for numerous individuals, he tirelessly negotiated contract language and benefit packages for his fellow employees. Fred was always willing to help out and was giving to so many people, sometimes too much and was often taken advantage of. Fred was an accomplished and published poet. He spent hours finding just the right word, phrase or feeling. His favorite reading genre was science fiction fantasy and his favorite author was Stephen Donaldson. He loved comedy movies and would laugh uncontrollably at Jerry Lewis. Frederick James Newman Sr. is survived by his parents, Virginia and Everett Newman of Princeton; his three sons, Frederick James Newman II and companion, Doris Linton, Daniel Everett Newman and companion, Skye Trott, of Princeton and Jeremy Andrew Newman and wife, Lisa, of Columbus, Ohio; he also leaves behind three grandchildren, MacKenzie Hanson of Baileyville and Miranda and Hunter Newman of Columbus, Ohio; his brother, David Newman and wife, Patricia; sister, Carol Higgins and husband, Dana; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and his very special cat, Baby. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10, at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais, where a time of remembrance will begin 7 p.m. Burial will be private.
