ROCKPORT – Frederick R. Cavanaugh, 84, retired plumbing and heating contractor, husband of the late Helen E. Hakko Cavanaugh for more than 60 years, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005, at Shore Village Nursing Center, Rockland. After graduating from Rockport High School, he enlisted into the U.S. Army, May 21, 1938. He attained the rank of sergeant with Battery “E” 240th Coast Artillery and on May 23, 1941, was discharged from active duty. A World War II, U.S. Army Veteran, he served as a sergeant with the 45th Infantry Division in the African, European Theaters and was involved in the liberation of Rome. Wounded in several battles, he was a recipient of The Purple Heart as well as many other service awards. After the death of his beloved wife on Oct. 27, 1998, Mr. Cavanaugh’s heart-break was evident yet he kept a keen mind and was an inspiration to many. Other than his wife, Mr. Cavanaugh was predeceased by a daughter, Gloria Jean Cavanaugh in 1978. He is survived by three daughters, H. Marie Brewer and her husband, Robert, of Portland, Mary Lou Cavanaugh and her husband, William Grusik, of Union, Kelly Ann Cavanaugh of Houlton; one brother, Charles Cavanaugh and his wife, Joan, of Round Rock, Texas; a sister, Marion Salminen of West Rockport; two grandchildren, Christopher Brewer and his wife, Debbie, Suzanne Brewer and her partner, Don Archibald, all of Portland; three great-grandchildren, Kate, Alex and Andrew Brewer, as well as several nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 13, 2005, at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St., Rockland. The Brothers of St. Paul’s Lodge of Masons will conduct a memorial service at 7 p.m. A celebration of Mr. Cavanaugh’s life will be held at the funeral home, 2 p.m. Monday. Interment will follow in West Rockport Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Paul’s Lodge of Masons, 361 Main St., Ocean View Chapter No. 201, Order of Eastern Star, care of Mrs. Shirley Hall, 15 Union St., Camden, ME 04843; or the American Diabetes Association, Portland Maine Office, 163 Lancaster St., Portland, ME 04101.
