AUBURN – Freeman S. Hilton, 78, of Franklin, died Tuesday, March 13, 2007, at Hospice House, Auburn, as a flock of wild turkeys took flight outside his window. He was born Jan. 5, 1929, in Dover, the eldest son of Elizabeth and William F. Hilton. He attended school at Foxcroft Academy and grew up in the Dover area. He was a hand sewer in the shoe shops, a gardener and a carpenter throughout his life. He was married to Charlene Carter, June 22, 1952. He was active in the Maine State Grange and in several local branches of the grange. His latest office was master of the Excelsior Grange, Poland, in 2005. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, ice fishing, watching his beloved Red Sox, and spending time with family and friends. He is survived by three children and their companions, a daughter, Martha Hilton and Matthew Agren of Lewiston, and two sons, Earl Hilton and Lysa Levin of Ellsworth, and William Hilton and Cheryl Hilton of Harmony; a sister, Ruby McTague of Dedham; two brothers, Calvin Hilton of Middletown, Conn., and Ronald Hilton of Holden; four grandchildren, Christopher, Aaron, Amie, and Lilly; and two great-grandchildren, Trek and Trevor; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Charlene; his parents and an infant sister. No funeral services will be held. A celebration of his life will be held 2 p.m. April 21, at Bayside Grange Hall, Bayside Road, Ellsworth.
