SCARBOROUGH – Helen Carpenter Eugley Hamilton, 70, wife of the Rev. Richard M. Hamilton, died March 18, 2007, at her home in Scarborough, of a glioblastoma brain tumor. She was born Jan. 25, 1937, in Newark, N.J. Her adoptive parents were Lucy M. (Polk) and Orson S. Carpenter. The family moved to Maine at the time of her senior year and she graduated from Waldoboro High School. She was employed by Central Maine Power Co. and for several years she was secretary at the Green Street United Methodist Church, Augusta. Helen was an active member in the United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women in the communities where she lived, Augusta, Waldoboro, Tavares, Fla., and Scarborough. In earlier years, she was active in the community through the Scouting program, the youth group in the churches, and the church school programs. She loved gardening especially with flowers. She loved nature walks, photography, canoeing and most of all, cultivating and maintaining friendships. She took a positive, thankful attitude toward her life and all its possibilities and this continued throughout her illness. In 1961, she married Ernest C. Eugley Jr. His death came in November 1994. She is survived by her three children and grandchildren, Kevin Eugley and his wife, Brenda, of Biddeford and their children, Kristen and Nathan, Karen Schaller and her husband, Kurt, of Exeter, Brian Eugley and his wife, Michele, of Richmond, Va., and their daughters, Laura and Jenna; and a sister-in-law, Maybelle Mank of Waldoboro. She married Richard M. Hamilton in September 1998 and he survives her. During their marriage they traveled extensively in Turkey, England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland, and in Europe, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Northern Italy. Their last trip was to Alaska. She is survived by five stepchildren and 10 stepgrandchildren, Susan and her husband, Roland Ouelletteand their children, Nicole and husband, Brian Erwin and their daughters, Alissa and Alaina, Janel Ouellette, Richard Ouellette and Joshua Ouellette, Judith and husband, James Robichaud, and daughters, Corrine and Crista Getchell, of Bangor, James Hamilton and his wife, Collette, of Saco and son, Zachary, Christopher Hamilton and his wife, Jennifer, of White River Junction, Vt., and their children, Tyler, Kyle and Caroline; and Andrew Hamilton and his wife, Stacy, of Manchester, N.H. She is also survived by two sisters and two brothers, Julie Treweeke of Butler, N.J., Rosemary Vanderhoff of Apex, N.C., Philip Carpenter and his wife, Sue, of Cape Elizabeth, and Eugene Dean of Ormond Beach, Fla.; several nieces and nephews, and many dear friends. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 24, at West Scarborough United Methodist Church. Interment will be at German Protestant Cemetery, Waldoboro.
