CHERRYFIELD – Gardner C. Grant, 91, died unexpectedly April 9, 2007, at Downeast Community Hospital, Machias. Gardner was an alumnus of Cherryfield Academy and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from the University of Maine in 1937. He was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. Throughout his life, he was a strong supporter of quality education. For 29 years, Gardner was postmaster in Cherryfield. He helped operate his father’s lumber business for many years. Gard taught high school in Steuben for a while. He was a manager of Calais Employment Service, and instructor of engineering hydraulics at the Yale Bowl during World War II. He was awarded for exceptional service by the Army Air Forces Training Command School. Mr. Grant long valued being a Rotarian, Mason and member of the Knights of Pythians. His favorite pastime was carpentry. He was an excellent carpenter from his early days until the time of his death. He loved the woods and relished his camp on Spring River Lake for decades. Grant had a dry sense of humor so welcomed by those who really knew him. He was much appreciated for his ability to give sound advice based on good common sense. Gard Grant loved and appreciated his family so much as they did him. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Virginia; two sons, Phil and Wayne; a daughter-in-law, Katherine Grant; four grandchildren, Karen McLean, Leola Carter, Andrea Goodell and Maria Grant; four great-grandchildren, Timothy Goodell, Kamen McLean, Colby McLean and Savannah Carter; a brother-in-law, Frank B. Gay; and three sister-in-laws, Barbara Gay, Betty Gay and Lorna Gay. He was predeceased by a brother, Philip F. Grant; and a sister, Priscilla Chamberlain. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call 6-7 p.m. Sunday, April 15, at Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, 47 Main St., Milbridge. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Monday, April 16, at the funeral home with the Rev. Dr. Dand F. Kennedy officiating. Burial will be held after at Pine Grove Cemetery, Cherryfield.
