HOULTON – Garth Maynard Gooding, 75, died Jan. 6, 2006, at a local hospital. He was born Oct. 20, 1930, at Stockholm, the son of Harry E. and Gladys I. (Bean) Gooding. Garth served in the U.S. Army for two years and then with the U.S. Army Reserves for two years. He graduated from Presque Isle High School and Aroostook State Normal School, which is now UMPI. He went on to Gorham State Teachers College to earn his teaching degree and his master’s degree in Library Science from the University of Maine, Orono. He taught sixth grade at Lambert School for more than 17 years, then spent 25 years as a librarian at Houlton High School and was the score keeper for the school basketball games for more than 20 years. He was a long time member of the Military Street Baptist Church, where he was a former Sunday school teacher, Deacon Emeritus and superintendent. He was a former member of the National Education Association, the Maine Education Association, and the Maine Educational Media Association. He was a member of the MEA-Retired, the Aroostook Retired Educators’ Association and was an active member of Gideons International for more than 30 years. Garth is survived by his wife of nearly 48 years, V. Kathleen Gooding; his mother, Gladys (Bean) Gooding; his daughter, Alison A. Gooding; sister, Glenna Hirsch and her husband, Jerry; aunts, Eunice Hemingway and Ellouise Somers; several nieces and nephews; many special friends and loved ones. He was predeceased by his father, Harry E. Gooding; and his brother, Joseph A. Gooding. Friends may call at the Military Street Baptist Church Monday 10 a.m. until the time of the service 11 a.m., with the Rev. Randall Burns, officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery.
