MOUNT HOLLY, N.C. – George E. Martin Sr., 70, formerly of Millinocket, passed away Jan. 6, 2008, at his home in Mount Holly, N.C. George was born Sept. 3, 1937, in Cincinnati, the son of George and Amelia (Smart) Martin. Surviving are his bride of 47 years, Theresa; two sons and daughters-in-law, George E. Martin Jr. and Kathleen of Charlotte, N.C., and Allan S. Martin and Marie of Tampa, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Laura, Matthew, Bradley, Andrew, Benjamin, Katherine and Samuel; six sisters, Joan Cappel and husband, Jim, Carol Martin, Dorothy Hay, Amelia Sousa, Dora Wessleman and husband, Jude, all of Cincinnati and Georgia Davies of Florida. George also had many nieces and nephews. George was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, stationed at Loring Air Force Base between 1955 – 1959. During this time, he traveled to Millinocket, where he met his bride, Theresa. They dated for four years and were married July 23, 1960, at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, Millinocket. Soon after, they relocated to Cincinnati and George began his career in the printing industry. After the birth of George Jr. in Cincinnati, they relocated to Millinocket, where Allan was born in 1965. This is where they lived until 1981, when they relocated to Topsham and Gardiner. George had a strong entrepreneurial spirit and was self-employed as Martin’s Enterprise. He held a master’s license for oil burner installation and repair. The name of the business was Martin’s Heating Sales and Service. George also owned Martin’s Shoe Store and Martin’s Tax Service. For many years he owned and managed numerous rental properties. George and Theresa retired and moved to Mount Holly, N.C., in 2004, where they frequently attend church at Belmont Abbey Basilica. George had a strong Catholic faith and devotion to the divine mercy. Friends are invited to visit with the family 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Lamson Funeral Home, 11 Tamarack St., Millinocket. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, 112 Maine Ave., Millinocket, with the Rev. Joel Cyr, pastor, presider. Military honors will be held after the service at the church. Spring interment will be at Millinocket Cemetery.
