GOULDSBORO – George E. Potter, 91, died Monday, Nov. 14, 2005, at a Milbridge healthcare facility. He was born Sept. 25, 1914, in Gouldsboro, the son of Steven and Ida (Scoffield) Potter. George spent mostly of his life on and around the ocean. He was a lobster fisherman from the age of eight until he retired at the age of 76. George fished hake trawls at a time when they were plentiful. He was a pulp cutter on Iron Bound Island and worked on a road construction crew in Gouldsboro for a short time. He was also an avid hunter who loved spending hours telling tales of the ocean and every detail of a hunt. George is survived by four sons, Steven Potter and his wife, Janet, Melvin Potter and his wife, Sidney, all of Fillmore N.Y., Terry Potter and his wife, Claudette, of Gouldsboro and David Potter and his wife, Judy, of Orland; two stepdaughters, Lorene Martin and her husband, Paul, of Sullivan and Belinda Cowperthwaite and her husband, George, of Gouldsboro; a brother, Everett Potter and his wife, Kaye, of Gouldsboro; many grandchildren, stepgrandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Bernice M. (Hume) Potter; a sister, Thelma Bunker; and a grandson, Russell Potter. Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19 at Bunker Cemetery, South Gouldsboro. Arrangements are by Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Milbridge.
