PORTLAND – George N. McMahon passed away April 20, 2006. He was born July 13, 1916, in Brewer, the son of Dr. Harold C. McMahon and Marion Nelson McMahon. He attended Brewer schools and graduated from Brewer High School in 1934, Higgins Classical Institute in 1935 and Babson College, Wellesley, Mass., in 1940. Prior to World War II, Mr. McMahon was employed by the Glenn L. Martin Aircraft Company in Baltimore, Md. During the war, he served in the U.S. Army Air Force in England, Normandy and central Europe. He married Jane G. Van Dyk in Brewer, on Nov. 15, 1949. Mr. McMahon had a 35 year career with the Federal Housing Administration in Maine and Vermont, retiring in 1978 as the State of Maine Director of Housing and Urban Development. Mr. McMahon was proud of his Maine heritage; his ancestry in this state can be traced back 10 generations. As a young man, he pursued many outdoor activities. An avid hunter and fisherman, he loved to spend time in the woods and on the water with family and friends alike. He was a lifelong member of the Bangor-Brewer Salmon Pool. Later in life, he and his wife spent winters in Florida and enjoyed traveling. He especially enjoyed many vacations with his children and grandchildren – from Mooselookmeguntic Lake to Orlando, Fla. Mr. McMahon is survived by is wife, Jane of Portland; and three daughters, Mary Gulezian and her husband, Dean, of Cumberland, Anne M. Coleman and her husband, Tim, of South Berwick, Ellen J. Mazuzan and her husband, Chris, of Falmouth. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Peter M. Gulezian of San Francisco, Calif., Rachel A. Gulezian of Cumberland, Meredith A. Coleman of Orlando, Fla., Elizabeth M. Coleman of South Berwick, Kirk L. Mazuzan and Scott N. Mazuzan of Falmouth. Visiting hours will be held 3-5 p.m. Sunday, April 23, at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Monday, April 24, at the Foreside Community Church UCC, 340 Foreside Rd., Falmouth. Interment will be private at a later date. Mr. McMahon’s family wishes to extend their thanks to the caring and compassionate staff at Brentwood Manor. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Beacon Hospice, 54 Atlantic Place, South Portland, ME 04106.
