GEORGE WOJTASIK OLD TOWN – George Wojtasik, 69, died peacefully at his home in Old Town on April 30, 2004. He had a strong love for the theatre and studied drama under Walt Boughton at Ripon College in Wisconsin where he received a bachelor’s degree in 1956. He moved to New York City in 1960 where he worked as a freelance director and production stage manager in a variety of venues. In 1967, George was appointed managing director of Equity Library Theatre (E.L.T.), producing 196 plays over the next 22 years. While at E.L.T. he won many prestigious theatre awards including a special Antoinette Perry (Tony) Award in 1977. In 1991, George accepted the position as director at the Grand Auditorium in Ellsworth where he remained until his retirement in 1997. He decided to continue residence in Maine where he and his family had enjoyed many happy vacations since the 1960s on Mount Dessert Island. George is survived by his children, Ann Sterling and Nicholas; his mother, Adeline Zwierecki; a sister, Laurel Martinsek; and two brothers, Lawrence and Joseph.
