FORT FAIRFIELD – Gerald R. “Ged” Barnes, 70, husband of Mrs. Glenda L. (Barker) Barnes, passed away Friday, July 22, 2005, at a Caribou nursing facility after a brief illness. He was born Aug. 17, 1934, at Fort Fairfield, the son of William Glen and Alice (Haley) Barnes. Gerald was a 1953 graduate of the Fort Fairfield High School and a 1954 graduate of M.C.I. and attended the University of Maine at Orono. Gerald was married to Glenda L. Barker Nov. 24, 1956, and proudly served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany from 1957 to 1959. As a young man, Gerald worked as a potato inspector for the State of Maine and later engaged in seed potato growing with his father until Glen’s retirement in 1976 with Gerald retiring in 1989. Mr. Barnes was raised to the degree of master mason at the former Frontier Masonic Lodge No. 112 AF & AM of Fort Fairfield, where he held the position of Worshipful Master five times. He later became affiliated with the Trinity Lodge No. 130 AF & AM of Presque Isle, was a member of the Garfield Trinity of the York Rite and the Anah Temple Shrine. Gerald served a three year term on the Aroostook County Potato Board. He was an avid outdoors men and was a member of the Atlantic Salmon Federation and a lifetime member of the Atlantic Salmon for Northern Maine. Gerald was predeceased by his father, William Glen Barnes on Nov. 10, 1994. He is survived by his mother, Alice Haley Barnes of Clearwater, Fla.; his wife of 48 years, Glenda L. Barnes of Fort Fairfield; one son, Steven Glen Barnes and his wife, JoAnne, of Caribou; two daughters and son-in-law, Tamara and Thomas G. Highfield III of Lake Worth, Fla., Katherine “Kate” Barnes of Fort Fairfield; one brother, Joseph W. Barnes and his wife, Karoldene, of Veazie; one sister, Marcia Mosey and her husband, George, of Keene, N.Y.; four stepgrandchildren, Amy Buster of Washington state, Adam Pelkey of Vermont, Yvette Goodman and Thomas Highfield IV, both of Florida; one great-stepgrandchild, Skylar Goodman of Florida; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Monday, July 25, 2005, at the Dorsey Funeral Home, 144 Main St., Fort Fairfield, where a Masonic service will be conducted 7 p.m. by the officers and members of the Trinity Masonic Lodge No. 130 AF & AM, Presque Isle. A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 26, 2005, at the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 170 Main St., Fort Fairfield, with the Rev. Susan Murphy officiating. Interment will follow at the Riverside Cemetery, Fort Fairfield. A reception in memory of Mr. Barnes will be held at the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, immediately following the interment service.
