CONNOR – Gertrude Merchant, 87, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2007, at a Caribou healthcare facility. She was born March 14, 1919, in Connor, the daughter of Eugene and Eva (Prue) Damboise. She was a graduate of Caribou High School in 1936 and then worked at Birdseye, McCains and sold tupperware for several years. Gertrude loved to read, watch television and do word puzzles. She was a communicant of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and was a member of the Daughters of Isabella. She is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, Henry Merchant of Connor; six children, Eugene Merchant of Connor, Leon Merchant and his wife, Nancy, of Caribou, Carolyn Nadeau and her husband, Gary, of Attleboro, Mass., David Merchant of Cheyenne, Wyo., Henry Merchant and his ex-wife, Debbie, of Camden, Susan Merchant of Connor; 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; a brother, Hartley Damboise of Connor; two sisters, Viola Willard of North Port, Fla., and Hilda Kashmar of South Portland; several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a brother, Gilford Damboise. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Monday, Jan. 22, at Lancaster-Morgan Funeral Home, 11 Clover St., Caribou. Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Jean-Paul LaBrie officiating. Interment will take place in the spring at Sacred Heart Cemetery, North Caribou.
