JONESPORT – Mrs. Gertrude S. Mitchell died peacefully on Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004, at the Sunrise Healthcare Facility, where she had resided for the past several months. Born July 28, 1908, in Machias, to Augustus and Joann (Strout) Stevens. She graduated from Machias High School and Washington State Normal School (now University of Maine, Machias). Gertrude was the register of probate in Machias, and later served in the probate office in Auburn. After leaving that position, she accepted a position with the law firm Linnell, Choate, and Webber, where she continued until her retirement in 1972. Mrs. Mitchell was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution National Society (DAR). Her retirement years were spent in her home at Sandy River Beach. She will be remembered as a loving mother, an avid and accomplished bridge player, and a relentless home improvement visionary. She was predeceased by her husband of 39 years, Gerald R. Mitchell, in 1978; and by her daughter-in-law, the former Denise C. Croteau, in 1984. She is survived by her two sons, Peter and his wife, Jeanne, of Yarmouth, and Gerald Jr. and his wife, Karla, of La Mirada, Calif.; grandchildren, Jonathan and his wife, Erica, Steven and his wife, Jennifer, Gerald III and his wife, Melissa, Benjamin and Lyle; a great-granddaughter, Sofia. She also leaves through marriage two additional grandchildren, Tonja Pompey and her husband, Mike, and Tara; a great-grandson, Michael Pompey Jr. At Gertrude’s request a private service followed by interment will be conducted this summer at the Greenwood Cemetery in Jonesport.
