JONESPORT – Gladwyn Alley, 83, died unexpectedly Nov. 30, 2004, as the result of an auto-mobile accident. He was born Feb. 9, 1921, in Jonesport, the son of the late Otis and Annie Alley. He spent his early years on Head Harbor Island in the fishing village, Sealand. When the village was disbanded his family moved to Jonesport where he graduated from Jonesport High School. Gladwyn is survived by his sister, Hilda Hastey of Newport; as well as three nephews; one niece; and several great- nieces and great-nephews. Although Gladwyn never married he was surrogate father and grandfather to many in the Jonesport, Beals communities. In his quiet way he has touched many lives and we will miss him. He served in the Anzio-Rome Campaign in World War II where he was recognized for bravery and received the Purple Heart for being wounded in combat. True to his nature he never talked about the war but over time little vignettes would be shared that let you know that he was indeed battle tested and came home a hero in the best sense of the word. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, at Sawyer Memorial Church in Jonesport. The pastor of the church, the Rev. George Woodward, along with the Rev. Dr. Eric W. Kelley, pastor of the Williston-West UCC, Portland, will be celebrants. In accordance with Gladwyn’s wishes, he was cremated. Burial of cremated remains will be in the spring in Greenwood Cemetery, Jonesport. <
