WELLS RIVER, Vt. – Gladys Esther Vigent, 91, died May 14, 2006, after a sudden illness. She was born Jan. 4, 1915, in Bangor, the daughter of Purdy Joseph and Natalie I. (Gilman) Smith. She married Leo F. Vigent. They spent many summers at their ocean front cottage at Lamoine Beach. She was a long time resident of Wells River. She took many trips with the elder hostel. Her travels took her to Alaska, Hawaii, Panama Canal, Norway, Ireland and China among other places. Gladys was a member of the North Country Chorus for many years. She was a member of the Wells River Congregational Church. She was a retired teacher having taught in Wells River, Vt., South Ryegate, Vt., and Blue Mount Union. She was predeceased by her husband, Leo F. Vigent Feb. 4, 1991; and a brother, Gordon Smith. Survivors include five sons, Joseph P. Vigent of North Haverhill, N.H., James G. Vigent of Sacramento, Calif., John F. Vigent of Wallingford, Conn., Jeffrey A. Vigent of North Hampton, Mass., and Jay L. Vigent of Wells River, Vt.; eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, May 19, at the Ricker Funeral Home, 1 Birch St., Woodsville, N.H. with the Rev. Betty Ann Abild officiating from the Wells River Congregational Church. Burial will take place at East Lamoine Cemetery, Lamoine, at the convenience of the family. Ricker Funeral Home, Woodsville, N.H. is in charge of arrangements.
