MILBRIDGE – Gladys Walker Hicks, 86, went to be with her Lord and Savior Thursday, July 5, 2007, at a Milbridge health care facility. She was born April 2, 1921, in Foster Center, R.I., the daughter of the late Nathan and Lena (Card) Walker. Mrs. Hicks was well known for her love of children, having been a foster parent for many. She was active in the Stratton Union Church, Stratton, for many years and also the Church of the Open Bible, Cherryfield, for the past six years. She touched so many lives by making nearly 500 quilts and donating them to people in her later years. Mrs. Hicks was loved by so many. She was a passionate story teller ad especially remembered by her children, with whom she would continually break into song at the drop of a hat. This is something her children and grandchildren continue to this day as a joyous remembrance of Grammie. She shared 42 years of marriage with the late George E. Hicks Sr. Family members include her children, George Hicks and his wife, Anne, of Brazil, Gladys Bennett and husband, David, of Stockton Springs, Donald Hicks and wife, Betty, of Addison, Roberta Crane and husband, Donald, of Harrington, Sue Ellen McCormick of South Portland, Joseph Hicks and wife, Ruth, of Barre, Vt., and Stephen Reed of Barre, Vt.; 18 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; a brother, Lester Walker of Worcester, Mass.; a sister, Viola Ulm of East Killingsly, Conn.; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, July 8, at Church of the Open Bible, Route 1, Cherryfield. Graveside services will be held noon Monday, July 9, at New Stratton Cemetery, Stratton.
