SURRY – Grace Welch Lane, 98, died Jan. 7, 2007. Born Mary Grace Welch, April 17, 1908, in Hastings, Neb., she was the sixth of seven children to Thomas G. and Agnes Kelly Welch. She grew up in Missouri and Madison, Wis. At 5’3″, during her senior year, she was high scorer on the girl’s basketball team at Madison High School. After graduation, she worked as an executive secretary at the Carrier Corp., New Jersey. In 1937 she married Stanley Clark Lane, originally from Brockton, Mass. They resided for many years in Westfield, N.J. She did volunteer work for the Red Cross and for handicapped children. She was a homemaker and enjoyed gardening, sewing, bridge and entertaining. In 1969 her husband retired and they moved to Surry, where she was active in the Garden Club, the Surry Community Improvement Association and St. Joseph’s Parish, Ellsworth. She loved to stay busy, playing golf until the age of 89, walking the golf course in Blue Hill and pulling her own golf cart. She is survived by one daughter, Katherine S. Lane and her husband, Marshall R. Dodge, of Surry, four grand children, Elizabeth M. O’Malley, Tiffanie J. Dodge, Daniel P. Nelson and Stephen F. Nelson; three great-grandchildren, Taylor M. Dodge, Griffin M. Nelson and Sabine G. O’Malley; plus many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Stan; and son, Thomas G. Lane; her two sisters and four brothers. Calling hours will be held 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth.
