OTTER CREEK – Gwendolyn “Gwen” Althea (Smith) Hopkins, 77, died March 14, 2007, in Bar Harbor. She was born May 18, 1929, in Winterport, at the home of her grandparents, Silas A. and Nellie (Gordon) Lane. She was the daughter of Lawrence M. and Buford E. (Lane) Smith. Gwen was a loving and caring mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was an avid gardener and was looking forward to spring to do her annual planting. She was content to stay for many hours in her gardens. Gwen also had a passion for feeding the birds and animals. She was a member of the Otter Creek Congregational Church and the Ladies Aid society. Gwen was always there to give a helping hand to those in need, and gave unselfishly of her time and of herself. She is survived by her son, Scotty Hopkins and wife, Cheryl, of Otter Creek; two daughters, Brenda Peckham and husband, Clarence, of Albuquerque, N.M., and Sherri Alley and husband, Thomas, of Bar Harbor; one brother, Rodney Smith and wife, Sylvia, of Seal Harbor; one sister, Joyce Carey and husband, William, of Surry; eight grandchildren, John Hopkins-Conner and wife, Jennifer, of Las Vegas, Wendy Hopkins of Ellsworth, Theresa Hanson of Fergus Falls, Minn., William Peckham of Stoughton, Wis., Robert Alley of Bar Harbor, Charlotte Carr and husband, Blay, of Somesville, Cecilia Alley of Bar Harbor, and Shelby Hopkins of Tremont; and eight great-grandchildren. Gwen was predeceased by her loving husband, Robert W. Hopkins; and their son, Robert Allen Hopkins. Friends are invited to call 3-5 p.m. Sunday, March 18, at Jordan-Fernald, 48 Eden St., Bar Harbor, where funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Monday with Pastor Scott Records officiating.
