EAST MACHIAS – Harlan Hatfield Gardiner, 90, died peacefully April 7, 2008, at a Penobscot health care facility. He was born March 22, 1918, in East Machias, the only child of Earnest B. and Viola (Ackley) Gardiner. Harlan attended Washington Academy and served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 to 1945. He received a Good Conduct Medal and an American Theater Campaign Ribbon. He enjoyed writing poetry and working with wood. Harlan was a life long resident of East Machias and worked as a carpenter and jack-of-all trades. He was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Evelyn (Bro-wn) Gardiner, September 2003. A graveside memorial service will be held 11 a.m. April 21 at Village Cemetery, East Machias.
