MEDWAY – Harold “Buz” Rushton Gerry, 73, died Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2006. He was born Nov. 9, 1932, in Lincoln. He attended Mattanawcook Academy and was the valedictorian for his graduating class. He was also valedictorian of his graduating class at University of Maine, Orono and graduated magna cum laude in 1956, with a degree in education. He taught locally at Mattanawcook Academy and Lee Academy before moving west to Peoria, Ariz. He worked for the Peoria Unified School District for more than 30 years, as an educator and principal. He received his master’s degree in education from Arizona State University in 1965 and also received his reading specialist degree from Arizona State University in 1973. While living in Peoria, Ariz., Buz was active in the Kiwanis Club, City Council and the GOP. After retirement from education in 1989, Buz enjoyed travelling the U.S., plus canoeing and skiing. He was also a volunteer for the American Red Cross. After many years of snowbirding between Maine and Arizona, Buz moved to Maine to stay in 2005. He loved Maine and all of the family and friends he had there. He is predeceased by his father, Harold J.; mother, Grace A.; siblings, Faye, Harland and Floyd; his first wife, Evangeline Bailey Gerry, also of Lincoln. Survivors include his second wife, Roberta Jean; daughter, Debbie L. Walls and her spouse, Terry, of Virginia; daughter, Alys L. Carnesi and her spouse, Ralph, of Arizona; brother, Clayton and his wife, Phyllis; sister-in-law, Melba; and many grandchildren who loved him very much. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, at Chase Road and the Penobscot River. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the University of Maine Foundation, Two Alumni Place, Orono, ME 04469-5792.
