WALDORF, Md. – Harold Robert Rees Jr. passed away peacefully Sept. 26, 2007, with his wife by his side at home, after a long illness. He was born Oct. 9, 1943, in Dover-Foxcroft. He attended Ricker Junior College, Houlton, and later received his bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Maine – Augusta and completed Officer Candidate School in 1967. He completed the engineer officer basic course in 1970 and branch transferred to finance in 1978. He served more than 28 years with the Maine Army National Guard, serving most of that time as a full-time finance technician in the State Army Comptroller’s Office. He was called to active duty to serve in the Pentagon during Desert Shield/Desert Storm. He retired as a colonel in 1993. After retiring from the military, he went to work as a civilian for the Army National Guard Bureau, Washington, D.C., until his wife, Master Sgt. Rees, was called upon to serve as a first sergeant in Butte, Mont. At that time, Hal resigned from federal service to follow his active duty wife. When Shirley retired, they returned to their home in Maryland and he returned to federal service as a program manager for the CIO/G6 at the Pentagon. He worked there until his death. Hal received numerous awards and medals during his military career and founded the Professional Military Comptroller’s Association. He completed Command and General Staff College and was awarded his master’s degree. He was a Mason. Hal was a member of First Baptist Church, Waldorf, Md. He is survived by his wife, Shirley; his father, Harold Robert Rees Sr.; mother, Maude Doris Rees; brothers, Gene and his wife, Ellie, and Gary and his wife, Toni; sister, Diana Bowley and her husband, Richard; sister-in-law, Penny Rees; four children, Shawn and his wife, Polly, Bryan and his wife, Katrina, Maegan Rees and Kevin Rees; six grandchildren, Kellsie, Cameron, Nicole, Jade, Harrison and Thorin. He was predeceased by a brother, Kim. Visitation will be held 2-4 p.m. and 6 p.m. until the time of service 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, at Huntt Funeral Home, 3035 Old Washington Road, Waldorf, Md.
