CALAIS – Harold Roy Clark Sr., died peacefully April 26, 2004, at Calais Regional Hospital, with his loving family by his side. He was born June 10, 1929, in Milltown, the eldest son of Harley and Elizabeth (Lawless) Clark. He was educated in Calais schools, and graduated from Calais Academy. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He worked 40 years as a papermaker for Georgia Pacific Corporation, retiring in 1991. He was also the co-founder and owner of Clark Real Estate in Calais for 27 years, along with his wife, Gloria. Harold had a great love for the Calais community, serving on the city council for 18 years. During these 18 years, he served as chairman and Mayor five times. He was first elected on April 4, 1977, and resigned as mayor on May 25, 1995, due to failing health. During his political career, he never lost an election. Harold had a diverse range of hobbies including, hunting, fishing, gardening and any activity at his beloved Howard lake cottage. But his greatest love was for his family. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Gloria (Johnson) Clark; two sons, Harold Clark Jr. and wife, Dawn-Ann, of Calais, and Roger Clark; one daughter, Dr. Joy Clark and husband, Jack Deutsch; four grandchildren, Tessa and Jesse of Calais, Peter and Sharin of Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y.; a sister, Joyce St. Pierre of Brunswick; a brother, Harley Clark Jr. and wife, MayBelle, of Calais and Florida; a sister-in-law, Eleanor Clark; a special aunt and uncle, Hazel Crossman of Milltown, and C. Kenneth Scott of Kissimmee, Fla.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his younger brother, Norman Clark. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Harold requested that in lieu of flowers, donations should be sent to the Milltown Athletic Scholarship Fund, care of Bangor Savings Bank, 232 North St., Calais, ME 04619. Arrangements are under the care of Cremation Services of Maine, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast.
