NEWBURGH and SOUTH PORTLAND – Harold S. “Stan” Hedlund died peacefully on Monday, Sept. 29, 2003, at a Bangor hospital after a brief illness. He was born on April 20, 1914, in Worcester, Mass., the second child of Christine (Benson) and Charles L. Hedlund. Stan spent his youth in Worcester, Mass., spending many wonderful summers with relatives in New Sweden. He graduated from high school in Worcester, Mass., and shortly after joined the U.S. Postal Service. He entered the Army in 1943, serving in the U.S. Invasion Post Office until 1946. He earned the rank of Master Sergeant in the U.S. Army, and he was in Normandy Invasion of Omaha Beach. Shortly after enlisting in the army, he married F. Marjorie Stanton of Springfield, Mass. In 1946, Stan came back home to join the Railway Mail Service, working the Portland to New York City route. He and Marjorie moved to South Portland in 1946, buying their first and only home at 38 Reynolds Street. Stan went to work at the Portland Post Office, when rail mail service was discontinued in the early 1960’s. He retired in 1977, with 38 years of postal service. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of Disabled American Veterans. Stan had moved from South Portland in February of 2003 to live in the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Wesley and Joyce. He will be missed deeply by sons and daughters-in-law, David S. Hedlund and Charlotte Aldi of Bellbuckle, Tenn., Wesley H. and Joyce Hedlund of Newburgh, Dana B. and Joanne Hedlund of Boulder City, Nev.; a daughter and son-in-law, Donna C. Hedlund and James Bergeron of Gorham; a sister, Evelyn Montague of California; a special nephew, Clifford Nelson of Milbury, Mass.; and three grandchildren, Cortney C. Hedlund, Casey L. (Hedlund) Adamsen, and Renee M. Hedlund. He was predeceased by his loving wife, F. Marjorie Hedlund; an infant daughter, Marjorie Hedlund; his brother, Willis Hedlund; and his sisters, Edla MacLaren and Ethel Green. A service of remembrance will be held 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, with Rev. Robert T. Carlson, Chaplain of Husson College, officiating. Interment will be at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Augusta. Friends may call from 3 p.m. until time of the service.
