OLD TOWN – Harriet E. Woodsum, 80, passed away Monday, Dec. 5, 2005, in Old Town. She was born Nov. 7, 1925, in Bangor, the daughter of Gerald R. and Marcia S. (Springer) Woodsum. Harriet attended Old Town schools and later graduated from the University of Maine. She earned a master’s degree in religious education from the South Western Theological Seminary in Texas. Harriet taught for several years in Maine, then in Islip, Long Island, New York, where she remained until her retirement in 1985. After returning to Old Town, she was an active member of the United Baptist Church. She served on the board of trustees of the Penobscot Christian School in Bangor for many years. Harriet was a member and past president of the Retired Teachers, Penobscot Chapter. She organized a local chapter of the Hospital Chaplaincy, a non-denominational volunteer group whose purpose is to provide nursing home residence with comfort items such as afghans, shawls, special holiday tray favors and other items. Harriet was a member and past president of the Neeburban Club. She enjoyed reading books as well as volunteering at the Old Town Library delivering them to the homebound. Harriet traveled around the world having visited several countries. She is survived and will be sadly missed by a special friend, Barbara Conners of Old Town and many other friends. A sincere and special thank you to Jin Roy and her staff at Young’s Elder Care in Old Town for their devoted care and welcoming hospitality during Harriet’s stay. She was predeceased by her parents, Gerald and Marcia and good friend, Opal McEachern. Friends may call 1 p.m. until time of service 2 p.m. Friday at the Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town, with the Rev. Bruce Stevens officiating. Interment will be held at Lawndale Cemetery in Old Town following the service.
