HOULTON – Harriette Johnstone Dunn died Dec. 9, 2005, at her residence. She was born on Jan. 5, 1934, the daughter of Roger H. and Viola (Savage) Johnstone of Oakfield. Harriette graduated from Ricker Classical Institute and the University of Maine. She married Frank Dunn at Webb Air Force Base in Big Spring, Texas. In 1957, with her daughter Julie, she flew to Japan to join her husband at Misawa Air Force Base. Her son Donald was born in Japan where the family spent three years. Upon returning to the States they lived briefly in Lubbock, Texas and then returned to Houlton. Harriette worked as a substitute teacher in area schools and then taught at Saint Mary’s Parochial School in Houlton. After two years at St. Mary’s she joined the social studies department at SAD 29 eventually becoming department head. She taught for more than 30 years and loved her students and her job. In the late 1990’s, she served two terms on the SAD 29 School Board. She left teaching on a disability and continuing ill health forced her to permanently retire on June 15, 2002. Harriette is survived by her husband of 49 years, Frank B. Dunn; one daughter, Julie Dunn Brown and David Brown; one son, Donald D. Dunn and his wife, Helen Martin Dunn; four grandchildren, Whitney Brown, Colby Dunn, Parker Brown, Molly Dunn, all of Houlton; her cousins, Nedra Hanson, Annette Stevens, Dennis and Lewis Michaud, Roger Nightingale, Caroline Khanna, Nancy Pullen, Beth Savage, Rebecca Anselm, Suzanne Brewer and Donald Savage; one aunt, Eleanor Savage; two sisters-in-law, Carlista Winter Johnstone and Geraldine (Cogswel) Dunn; one brother-in-law, John B. Dunn; several nieces and nephews; and a very special family friend, Marjorie Dyer. She also leaves many co-teachers and all of her very special students. Harriette was predeceased by her parents and one brother, Horace “Jeff” Johnstone. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Saturday, at Dunn Funeral Home, 11 Park St., Houlton. Services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, at the Donald Dunn Funeral Home. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Those who wish may make gifts in Harriette’s memory to Harriette J.
