HOULTON – Harry A. Lewin, 96, died Jan. 13, 2005, at Houlton. The son of William and Lena (Harvey) Lewin, he was born May 12, 1908, in Monticello. Harry was educated in the Monticello and Houlton schools, graduating from the Adult Education Department of Houlton High School in the Class of 1970. He started working in the woods helping his father, and later worked on his own. He was employed by the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad for 43 years, first as a welder and then as a mechanic. From 1942-1943, Harry served his country during World War II while on leave of absence from the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad. He served in five major battles, one being the Normandy Invasion. Receiving the bronze star, he also attained the rank of Master Sergeant. Harry was a member of the First Baptist Church on Court Street in Houlton. He served as Trustee, Deacon, and Sunday School teacher. In their retirement years, Harry and his wife, Avis, were avid travelers. They spent two summers in Europe, one in Hawaii, and traveled extensively in the United States and part of Canada. They spent 15 winters enjoying Florida. Harry was predeceased by his daughter, Roberta Lewin Long; and nine siblings. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Avis Elwell Lewin of Houlton; three grandchildren, Avis Gary and her husband, Earl, of East Corinth, Annette Thompson and her husband, Martin, of Fort Fairfield, and Percy Long; four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by sister-in-law, Ellen Lewin of Old Town, sister-in-law, Angeline Strait of Sherman Mills, sister-in-law, Roxanne Elwell of Sherman Mills; and several nieces and nephews. Friends may call 1-2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 16, 2005, at Bowers Funeral Home, 10 Water St. Houlton where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Robert Johnston officiating.
