ORLAND – Hazel L. (Rich) MacDonald, 83, went to be with the Lord Aug. 20, 2007, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. Hazel was born Sept. 30, 1923, in New Britain, Conn., to Archie and Florence Rich. Hazel played the piano and was a country western singer in numerous bands, and in a radio show Happy Valley Cowboys with her mother, sister and brothers. She met her husband, Colon, when he joined the show. They were married in 1942 and had five children. She enjoyed sewing clothes for her children and designing square dance dresses with matching men’s shirts. They owned and operated the Promenade In, a dance hall and square dance store on Verona Island. In 1969 they moved to Florida where Hazel and her husband continued to teach square dancing for the city of St. Petersburg, Fla., and numerous clubs. They also owned and operated a square dance store in Pinellas Park, Fla. Hazel was a 1942 high school graduate, and graduated from Motel Management School, Miami. She was a banquet manager for Ramada Inn for many years. Hazel and Colon retired and moved back to Maine in 1998. Hazel is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, Colon of Orland; two daughters, Carol Lally and husband, Richard, and Judith Miller and husband, Peter, all of Bucksport; two sons, Robert MacDonald and wife, Vicky, of Orland and Gary MacDonald and wife, Donna, of Silver Springs, Fla.; son-in-law, Jack MacLeod of Brewer; sisters-in-law, Virginia Rich of Brewer, Madeline Rich of Bangor and Ida Burgess of Rockport, Mass.; brother-in-law, Dana Tozier of Bucksport. Hazel loved her 11 grandchildren, Scott Lally, Dennis Lally, Jana Hanscom, Kelly Frye, Kevin MacDonald, Chris MacLeod, Kirsten Beckwith, Glenn Terry, Dana Terry, Melanie Hurd and Joseph MacDonald; her 11 precious great-grandchildren and her loving nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her daughter, Linda MacLeod in 1988; sister, Jeanette Tozier; brothers, Douglas Rich, Lloyd Rich and Merle Rich At Hazel’s request, there will be no visiting hours. Graveside committal services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24, at Riverview Cemetery, North Bucksport. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent in Hazel’s memory to Evangelical Baptist Church, 16 Central St., Bucksport, ME 04416 or Hospice, 14 McKenzie Ave., Ellsworth, ME 04605.
