BASS HARBOR – Helen A. Hopkins died Nov. 24, 2007, at Courtland, Ellsworth. She was born Aug. 22, 1919, in Lincoln, to Daniel and Harriet (Stinson) Gray. Helen was a creative person who enjoyed art, reading, dabbled in writing and was a great storyteller, a talent she inherited from her father. She loved animals and was a keen observer of nature. Her artistic abilities were probably best appreciated in the taxidermy work she did for several years. She had a strong work ethic, even in her later years, she made work where there wasn’t any, just to do it. Helen and her husband, John Hopkins, raised and showed ponies on the show circuit for several years. They made many friends. These years, she often spoke of as some of her happiest. The last of her years living in her house in Bass Harbor she enjoyed working in her garden and feeding the many wild birds and ducks that came to her yard. Helen is survived by a daughter, Jill Frels and husband, Bill, of Southwest Harbor; two sons, Micheal DeVisme and wife, Kathy, of Bass Harbor and David Schlaefer and wife, Irene, of Bernard; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Helen was predeceased by her beloved husband, John Hopkins; a daughter, Jennifer Cunio; and her brother, Leon Gray. Services for Helen will be private. Interment will be at Lincoln Cemetery, Lincoln.
