BREWER – Helen F. (Coffin) Gerald, 87, died Sept. 2, 2006, at a Bangor hospital. She was born Jan. 2, 1919, in Howland, the daughter of George and Winifred (Thomas) Coffin. Helen was a graduate of Howland High School in 1935 and attended nursing school in Brunswick and at Boston City Hospital. She was a nurse at the Workman Hospital in Lincoln for a number of years and later at the Ross Home in Bangor. When her husband of 45 years passed away in 1985, she resided at the Bangor House, where she actively participated in various activities. When her health began to fail, she made her home with her daughter, Carolyn, in Brewer. Helen was an avid reader and enjoyed crossword puzzles, knitting, sewing and other crafts. Surviving are two sons, Paul Gerald and his wife, Peggy, of Eddington and Alan Coffin and his wife, Jean, of Wakefield, Mass.; five daughters, Mary Pooler and her husband, Dan, of Brewer, Carolyn Slade of Brewer, Shelby Sutherburg and her husband, Leon, of Eddington, Alyson Coffin and her husband, Don, of Brewer and Jane Bean and her husband, Lester, of Hampden; 20 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one brother, Vernon Coffin of Walpole, Mass. In addition to her husband, Leonard, Helen was predeceased by a son, Rodney Gerald in 2000; and two sisters, Grace Hawkins of Lincoln and Pauline Keeler of Massachusetts. Family and friends may visit 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 5, at Kiley Funeral Home, 69 State St., Brewer, where a funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday with Pastor Judy Ahles presiding. Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Brewer.
