PRESQUE ISLE – Helen Dow, peacefully passed on in the early morning of May 14, 2004, at the Presque Isle hospital. She was born Nov. 20, 1916, in Easton, the oldest of the three children of Roy and Vera (Beckwith) Culberson. Helen graduated from Easton High School in 1936, the year she was crowned “Miss Easton.” After studying at Ricker college in Houlton and the Farmington Normal School, Helen married John Dow of Presque Isle in 1940, and spent her life as a rather remarkable homemaker, rearing her two children, Linda and David, and supplying nurturing care and support for her loving husband, John, for nearly 65 years. “Nana” loved dearly, and was dearly loved by all who knew her. She was a wonderfully giving woman who was a founding member of the Presque Isle Pierien and Onaway Clubs, and a member and a long-standing deaconess of the Congregational Church. She loved nature, especially birds, flowers, and camp life in the Allagash. She is survived by her husband, John, of Presque Isle, a son, David and his wife, Beverly, of Grand Falls, New Brunswick; a daughter, Linda Ballard and her husband, David, of Ellsworth; a brother, Claude Culberson of Suncook, N.H.; a sister, Sarah (Sally) Nardone of Presque Isle. Nana will be fondly missed and remembered by her four grandchildren, John, Jennifer, Missy, and Jad, their spouses; and two great-grandchildren, Eric and Liam. Funeral Services will be held 1 p.m. Monday, May 17, 2004, at the Presque Isle Congregational Church, with the Rev. Thomas Blackstone officiating. Interment will be at Fairmount Cemetery, Presque Isle. Donations may be made in memory of Helen to the Presque Isle Congregational Church, 29 Church St., Presque Isle, ME 04769.
