PRESQUE ISLE – Maxine Legassie Holmes, 70, died Sunday May 16, 2004, at a Presque Isle hospital. She was born Aug. 26, 1933, at Ashland, the daughter of Joseph and Evelyn (Soucier) Carney. She worked as a grader for 22 years at Indian Head Plywood in Presque Isle. Maxine was a devoted mother and grandmother, was strong in her faith, a former member of the daughters of Isabella, an avid bingo player and loved to dance. She is survived by her mother, Evelyn Carney of Presque Isle; two sons and their wives, Wayne and Toni Legassie, Joseph and Lisa Legassie, all of Presque Isle; three daughters and their husbands, Caroline and Peter Robichaud of Mapleton, Ann and James Kaiser, Janie and Gregory Smith, all of Presque Isle; three brothers, Alvery and Francis Carney of Ashland, Alcide Carney of Mapleton; two sisters, Florence Pelkey of Presque Isle, and Gloria Bernier of Mapleton; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her first husband, Rodney Legassie; and a brother, Oliver Carney. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Presque Isle, with the Rev. Fred Irving Celebrant. Friends may call 10 a.m. until time of the Mass at the church. Interment will be at Fairmount Cemetery.
